Hello my blogosphere fam! Happy New Week! Hope y’all had an amazing weekend?
So I’m doing my first post on music! I love music! Let’s just say I’m an addict. . . You need to see my music playlist, it’s what some people will call ‘unfeminine taste in music’. . . I guess I have my dad to thank for that. He loves music a lot that he basically influenced my music life unintentionally! Lest I forget, my dad loves D’banj especially that ‘Mobolowo won’ track but right now, his reigning hit single is Olamide’s ‘Melo melo’. . . You need to feel the jam in the car whenever he plays it! Oh mine! at times, it’s on repeat sef. . . He’s not ready to be an old school anytime soon I tell you.
Back to me, growing up with him made me love certain genres of music some guys would find intriguing when they hear a lady sing or whistle to it. I love reggae, jazz, soul, R n B, rock, oldies and I do a little bit of contemporaries; hiphop, not really my thing!
So I grew up listening to Bob Marley; there’s no track I can’t sing word for word! Lucky Dube, Kool n the gangs, Dolly Parton, Jim Reeves, Kenny Rogers, Fela Anikulapo Kuti and a whole lots of others. I discovered that recently, I have been jamming this song a whole lot. It’s a classic rock that I love so much; it’s that kind of song that you just want to swing your body to, move your waist a little slower, just shake the body kind of rhythm – in short, this song just needs a little salsa on a slower tempo you get what I am saying *winks*
The song is no other than ‘Baby Girl’ by Nel Oliver; a Beninese musician. Often times, I’ve found myself swinging my 24 inches waist to this song in front of the mirror; e no easy to get small waist I tell you. This song gives me goose pimples whenever I listen to it.
The lyrics of the song I’m gonna give you FOC! I’m that nice. It’s in French, English, Yoruba and Gun (Gun is a Benin Language). . . That reminds me of my trip to Benin Republic last year; Ogun State is kinda a little closer to that area. The combination of these languages in one song makes it very unique and amazing. It’s a reflection of a father’s prayers for his daughter who is about to get married. The song shows deep and great intent for tradition and love.
Trust me, this is an amazing song! I have shared lots of moments with my Dad and I can’t wait to share a dance with my Dad with this song specially playing on my wedding day; yea! Nothing can change that wish. . .
The first time I knew about this song was in ‘Abeni’ I watch films a lot; sorry. Abeni is an ‘old film’ courtesy Mainframe Productions; a popular film produced by Tunde Kelani. It has its settings in Benin Republic and Nigeria I guess. It’s about love between Abeni and a musician and this marriage, Abeni’s father doesn’t approve; I donno, hehehehehe, it’s been ages since I watched that film. It was almost at the end of the play that Nel Oliver sang that song in the film; it was an amazing moment. . . That feeling when you are watching a film and it feels like you are there or that scene is happening right now in front of you; that’s how I felt watching that scene and I guess that’s how I’d feel watching it again and again.
To cut the story short, I have decided to share that song with you! I know some people can’t wait to have that song again or if you’ve never listened to the song before, I promise you, you’d love it!
To download the song, click on download below the lyrics; then click the arrow pointing down at the upper side of the download page on the right; it’d bring two options, you should pick Direct Download. . . Viola! You have it on your phone (that’s for those who don’t know how dropbox works)!
I love you guys ehn! Keep refreshing, keep reading! Keep widening your horizon!
Till I come your way again this week, enjoy ‘Baby Girl’ by Nel Oliver. . . An amazing way to start the new week!
Don’t forget to drop your comments! I love to read your reactions and views!
Baby Girl – Nel Oliver
Chrs: Jesu she, Hwelin ganto she,
Wa se de she, Ovi she we
Nin dji djo ho,
Assou dagbe,
Kpo vi dji dji
Dona dona ni she
Gbe he me mite sien
Azon she ma dike, Ma kpe nou kounwe go
Dje dje vignin baby girl
Dje die hoin be sou gnonnou eh
Omon mi baby girl, iwo ti mon feran oh,
To fe lo si ile oko
Adouwa mon gba foun e,
K’Olorun mi ma baelo
Chrs: Though I hate to see you go
I know you have your life to live and I can see love in your eyes
The sun shines brightly in your heart
You’re never been so beautiful
And you can see my joy and pride for you
Though you smile I see your tears
Take his hand my baby girl,
And be his wife forever more
The time has come for you to go
Wipe your tears and never fear
Cause I will always be right here for you.
Tu sais j’ai tant reve
De pouvoir te garder,
Sans jamais t’partager
Mon enfant, ma baby girl,
Ton prince charmant est arrive
I never thought you’d leave me,
Soon for anyone so hard to let you go,
Oh my child, my baby girl
The time has come to live your life.
Chrs: The English one. . . lol

I love that song! It’s sooo beautiful.
Some years ago, I was watching the video on my phone and telling my mum how my dad and I would dance to the song on my wedding day
“So me and you will not dance abi? Let me see how that will happen” was her reply.
While it was funny then, I think on my wedding day… I’ll just have a bride and parents dance.

Lovely putting up the lyrics, this song is an evergreen.
Though you murdered the Yoruba part in the lyrics, wish it could be corrected.

Hello Anifat, thanks for your beautiful comment. I’m glad you enjoyed the post. As regards the Yoruba part, I do not quite think that I murdered it, I think there’s (more than) a tad difference between the Nigerian Yoruba and the Benin Republic Yoruba. I wrote the Yoruba part of the lyrics exactly as it was sung. Thanks for dropping by, looking forward to seeing more of you here.

Beautiful. I am a highly emotional guy, and I surf the internet sniffing for love song: Mark Anthony, Celine, Shania, etc. etc. Haha, I sang a remix version of this Nel Oliver’s classic shortly after my senior WAEC. And…and it got me a sponsor for my album entitled One Minute in 2010. Wow. Thanks Omalicha nwa for this post.

Oh wow! You’ve got such a classic taste, and I’m soooo big on Shania the most, and a whole lot of others. Do you do reggae? And is your album available on Apple Music? Thank you so much for dropping by! ❤️
